The Ideal Real-ationship to Your Thoughts

Thoughts are neither to be rejected not pursued. Simply observed and allow to flow to their logical conclusion - or completely ignored while placing the awareness in your body or on some external sense perception. These three techniques proceed in the order according to your skill and level of experience or discipline. 

1) Observe thoughts without getting involved in a conversation with them, allow them to flow to their logical conclusion:
A) for most beginners it is better to write it all down
B) when you are ready observe without writing

2) Ignore thoughts while placing the awareness in your body
A) start with the grossest and most noticable sensations, for example emotional fields hovering in your chest. this will help to complete those emotions.
B) as you become advanced treat all sensations as equal however gross or subtle they are. do not privilege certain sensations because they are more noticeable

3) Ignore thoughts while placing awareness on external stimuli
A) start with the sensation of something under your hands such as a table or your legs
B) move onto observing something still like a mug
C) try something that moves such as a candle.

There are more advanced techniques than these, but these are sufficient to learn how to disidentify from your mind. As they are mastered, more advanced techniques will announce themselves to you as you become ready to practice them.
